Installing a Water Saving Shower Head
A means of saving water is to change your shower nozzle / head.
There are many different types to choose from, but they can all be installed in a similar way.
Water saving shower heads can save water by restricting the amount of water which flows through them and by mixing the water with air giving a sensation of greater flow.
Removing the existing shower head
Use an adjustable spanner to remove the existing shower head.
To prevent any damage to the fixture you can wrap a rag within the jaws. This should prevent any damage to the chrome or enamel pieces.
Cleaning the shower stem
After removing the shower head a thorough clean of the shower stem should be done. Firstly remove any old left over Teflon tape that may have remained on the stem after the shower fixture was removed.
Cleaning the stem will help create a better seal when the new shower head is installed.
Applying Teflon tape
Once the Shower stem is clean, apply 3-4 turns of Teflon tape (also known as plumbers tape) to the thread of the clean shower stem. This tape will help prevent leaks.
When applying the Teflon tape always apply the tape in the direction in which the fixture will be tightened (clockwise direction). If the Teflon tape is wrapped in the wrong direction, it may come undone and tear when the fixture is installed onto the threaded stem.
Installing the Shower Head
When the Threaded stem is wrapped in Teflon, you can then install your new shower head and screw it into place. Tighten it slowly and carefully, not applying to much pressure. Remember to use a rag between the jaws of your adjustable spanner to prevent any damage to your new fixture.
