For years I dreaded when it was time to change the registration sticker, not only the cost of new Rego but then there was the frustration of removing the sticker from the windscreen. Sometimes taking ages and never completely removing it.
Then along came WD-40, which i had been using for many years on other things, but never for removal of labels, stickers or gummy residues.
Removing Registration Stickers
Spray a small amount of WD-40 on to a clean rag, then rub the rag over the registration sticker. Repeat the process to allow the WD-40 to penetrate (No waiting period is needed).
Use a sharp blade please don't use a cutlery knife as they are blunt, you might as well use a spoon! (saw someone do this).
Please make sure that the blade you use is not nicked or has burrs on it as it may scratch the glass windscreen when used.
Use the blade and scrape gently, pushing in between the glass and the registration sticker.
You might find that when removing the old registration sticker, not all lifts off at once, but that's ok.
Just keep scraping and re apply the WD-40 solution as needed. You should see the registration sticker coming off quite quickly.
You will find that after the old registration sticker is scraped off, you still have some gummy residue. Simply wipe with the WD-40 on a rag, and it should all disappear, leaving only streaks.
The next step will be to clean the windscreen and remove the WD-40. After all it is a lubricant of sorts.
I used Windex glass cleaner, only because that was in my cupboard. Any glass cleaner should do the job.
Just apply the glass cleaner to a clean rag and then wipe the WD-40 off the glass windscreen. Please make sure you use different sections of the rag as you clean, this will ensure that WD-40 and other gummy deposits aren't being re-applied with your dirty rag back on to the windscreen.
The glass windscreen should now be perfectly clean and dry, ready for a new registration sticker.
